02 How we work

The instrument maker’s method.

  1. Sight

    Every engagement opens with a fixed-length discovery: two weeks, stakeholder interviews, a systems audit, one written brief. You get a scope, a price, and a date before anyone writes code.

  2. Plot

    Architecture before construction. We chart the data model, the integration map, and the riskiest assumption in the plan - then prove that assumption with a working spike in the first sprint.

  3. Build

    Production systems in 90-day arcs. Weekly demos of running software, not status decks. You can stop at the end of any arc and keep everything: documented, tested, deployable.

  4. Calibrate

    Launch is a midpoint. We instrument what we ship, watch it under real load, and tune until the numbers hold steady - then hand over the dials, or keep a hand on them for you.

ReadSignFlow

Proof of who acknowledged what, sealed so tampering shows.

ReadSignFlow turns workforce policy acknowledgement into audit-grade evidence. Notices go out by email, SMS, WhatsApp and push; every acknowledgement comes back as a signed PDF, cryptographically bound to the exact version read. Underneath: multi-tenant .NET, tenant isolation enforced by the database itself, and an append-only audit log not even the application can rewrite.

The IQ Gym

A score with error bars, never a lone number.

An adaptive cognitive assessment and training system, built in-house and sold direct to consumers. Ability is measured by item response theory and reported as a norm-referenced score with a confidence interval; exposure control keeps every sitting fresh, and the training plan re-balances as the learner improves.

Named for the instrument that told you where you stand.

الأسطرلاب - the first computer

The astrolabe was the most sophisticated computer of the medieval world. Two plates of engraved brass could find the hour, the date, the direction of prayer, and the position of a thousand stars - a working model of the sky, folded flat enough to hang from a belt.

In tenth-century Aleppo, Mariam al-ʻIjliyya al-Astrulabi made them by hand. She apprenticed under Muḥammad ibn ʻAbd Allāh Nasṭūlus, the finest astrolabist of the age, and her instruments earned her a place at the court of Emir Sayf al-Dawla. Precision was not her ambition. It was her trade.

A thousand years later an asteroid crosses the sky bearing her name - 7060 Al-ʻIjliya, catalogued at Palomar in 1990. This studio is named for the instrument she made, and holds to what it stood for: an instrument is only beautiful if it is true.

How much does custom software development cost, and how do you price it?

Every Astrolabix engagement opens with a two-week paid discovery. It ends with a written scope, a price, and a date - whether or not you build with us. Build work is then priced by 90-day arc, so you see the number for each arc before it begins and commit to one arc at a time.

Pricing is settled in writing before an arc starts, not metered after the fact. Scope moves between arcs, never mid-build.

How long does it take to build custom software from scratch?

Astrolabix delivers production systems in 90-day arcs. Before an arc begins, a two-week paid discovery fixes the scope, the price, and the date. Two weeks plus one arc is roughly fifteen weeks from first conversation to software running in production. Larger platforms run across consecutive arcs.

You see the system every week while it is being built - a demo of running software, not a status deck. The date is never a surprise at the end.

What happens after the software launches - do you hand it over or stay on?

Launch is a midpoint, not a finish line. Astrolabix instruments what it ships, watches it under real load, and tunes until the numbers hold steady. Then you choose: take the dials, or keep our hand on them. Everything is documented, tested, and deployable, so an internal team can inherit it.

Handover is a deliverable, not a favor. Ongoing stewardship is offered, never assumed.

Can I hire you for a small project, or do you only take on large builds?

The smallest unit of work is the two-week paid discovery, and it stands on its own - you leave with a written scope, a price, and a date whether or not you build with us. Beyond that, the smallest build commitment is a single 90-day arc.

A great deal of useful work fits inside one arc: an integration, a migration, one system replaced. We would rather scope a small thing honestly than stretch it into a program.

We have a legacy system we can’t turn off. How do you migrate without breaking it?

Astrolabix migrates legacy systems one measured release at a time. The process is mapped as it actually runs - not as the org chart says it should - then paper, spreadsheets, and copy-paste integration are retired on a schedule. The old system keeps running until the replacement has proved it can carry the load.
